Psychotherapy
This term is applicable for a variety of treatment techniques that use “talk-therapy” to help a person identify and change distressing emotions, thoughts, and/or behaviors. This type of treatment can be administered either individually or in a group setting.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on thoughts and behaviors. The goal is to find and challenge the distorted or unhelpful thinking patterns, the respective
inaccurate beliefs, and the consequential maladaptive behaviors, and to move towards positive and healthy thoughts and behaviors. REBT is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on problems/issues as they relate to emotions,
thoughts, and behaviors. The goal is similar to CBT but focuses more on the emotional impact to our thoughts and behaviors. CBT: developed by Aaron Beck REBT: developed by Albert Ellis
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on trauma, PTSD, and disturbing life experiences. Studies have proven this modality as highly effective. EMDR therapy activates the brain’s information processing system that is blocked or imbalanced by an impact or trauma of a disturbing event, using an external stimuli. The traumatic memories and associations are accessed and reprocessed. These traumatic memories are then connected with new information and/or adaptivememories. The new associations connections are reported to eliminate emotional distress, increase cognitive insights, and reduce physiological arousal. Refer to EMDR.com for further information. EMDR: developed by Francine Shapiro
Trauma Therapy
This trauma model is a form of psychotherapy that guides survivors of childhood abuse through the various stages of trauma recovery. The models emphasize TRUST or therapeutic alliance. The therapist and client enter into the depths of and journey through the client’s story. The journey traverses into and through intense cognitive, emotional, and behavioral associations, interactions, and distortions. Kehler’s model incorporates components of cognitive-behavioral, systemic, attachment, and humanistic therapy models. 9-Stage Trauma Therapy: Developed by Byron Kehler
